From a tourist aspect, is there anywhere between Miami and Key West where i can get real close to Crocodiles?
I’m hoping to vacation in Florida next year (from England) and intend renting a car to drive from Miami to Key West, and hopefully see some Crocs on the way!
Yes. 1. Everglades National Park. Drive all the way down to Flamingo & walk over to the Marina. You’ll likely see a few in the canal & can gt up close & personal if you rent a canoe or kayak.
2. The Turkey Point Nuclear generating plant near Homestead has probably the largest number of American Crocs in one place, attracted by the warm water in its cooling canals. All you have to do is get there. The best way is by boat. But if you must drive: On your way to the Keys, when you get to Homestead, head East on Palm Ave (344th St) & follow the signs to the power plant (you can see it from some distance) It requires twists & turns & some dead ends. Years ago it was easy to get right up to it. Now it’s all guarded & fenced. But if you drive around (4 wd would be a big help) you can probably get close enough to some canals to see some crocs. Do NOT do this at nite. Do not go alone. Do not wear open shoes or shorts. Take mosquito repellant.
