Why are regions of the US not based on actual Geography?
For example asking what is the north and the south.
If you at a map of the US the area from Washington to Maine would be the North and that then could be separated into Northwest, Central North and Northeast.
The area from California to Georgia would be the south since it is the southern portion of the country, then it would be split Southwest, Central south and Southeast how can one portion of what is the south be called the south and not the others when there all are around the same latitude.
Regions of the US are partly based on geography and partly based on history and local culture. Kentucky, for example, was classified in a women’s magazine as “midwest” because their ZIP codes start with 4, the number the Postal Service assigned to midwestern states. The magazine was inundated with letters from Kentuckians saying they are southerners, and their events should be listed with events in the South.
The southern states you mention have been in recent years called The Sunbelt to describe the area where people retired from jobs in cold climates move to and buy retirement homes. However, the states west of Texas were barely settled or belonged to Mexico when the Civil War happened, and the states in the Southeast trace history and culture to that period.
States in the northern region you mention also have different histories and life styles, and do not feel a shared identity with states thousands of miles away.
